Sun Cups an Interview with David Lurie
EK: How did your company begin, and how has it evolved over the years?
DL: We began as a truffle company selling our product direct to retailers. In 2008, a man knocked on the door at Seth Ellis Chocolates with a jar of sunflower butter and a challenge: create a candy cup his peanut-allergic son could eat. We got to work right away, inspired by the idea of a peanut butter cup for everyone. A jar of sunflower butter, a handful of test batches and a day later we cracked the code. Sun Cups were born.
EK: What is a fond memory of how it all started or a trial or two of the early years?
DL: Being either covered in Chocolate from head to toe or when it was just two of us doing everything!
EK: I noticed on your website that not only do your products have kosher certification from EarthKosher, but also non-GMO, cocoa certified through Rainforest Alliance, and celiac friendly. What important values do you hold as a small grass roots company- maybe towards community or the environment?
DL: Because our product today is allergen free of: Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Gluten/Wheat, Soy, Egg, Shellfish, Fish, Sesame and Coconut we donate product to many related organizations.
EK: What are the different kinds of products that your company produces that EarthKosher provides kosher certification to?
EK: What are your favorite product, and your most popular product?
DL: Dark Sun Cups are our number one seller but my favorite is the Caramel Cups.
EK: How did you hear about EarthKosher, and why did you choose EarthKosher for your company’s kosher certification?
DL: We met Rabbi Goldman and Rabbi Blech in 2009 at the Fancy Food Show. We have created a long-term relationship and would never think of changing?
EK: What are the advantages and/or benefits of choosing the smaller kosher certifier for your kosher certification, Earth Kosher as your Kosher Certification Agency?
DL: EarthKosher is extremely responsive and for us it is all about the trusting relationship.
